ROMANO AVAZO

Radio Romano Avazo is a radio station that broadcasts in the Romani language in Prizren.

It covers topics related to the problems of the Roma, Ashkali and Egyptian communities in the municipality of Prizren and advocates for their improvement.

Prior to being registered in 2001 as an NGO, "Durmish Aslano" has been functioning as a cultural-artistic society since its founding in 1969. In 2007, this NGO received the license for local radio in Prizren. The radio is broadcast in the Roma language and the NGO aims to promote the culture, tradition and language of the Roma, providing information for the well-being of this community.

The founder of the radio was the playwright and journalist, Nexhip Menekshe. Now the organization is led by Fatmir Menekshe.

Nexhip Menekshe

Founded Radio "Romano Avazo" in 2007, which was the first radio in the Romani language. Menekshe was a playwright, journalist and professor of the Romani language. He died in 2019 at the age of 53.
Menekshe devoted his whole life to art – he was the author of twelve plays and the director of 20 performances, which were mainly related to the description of the life and tradition of the Roma.
On April 8, 2022, President of Kosovo, Vjosa Osmani, awarded Nexhip Menekshen the Presidential Medal of Merit posthumously, in recognition of his significant contributions to the education of Roma children, dramaturgy, and the promotion of Roma culture and history, as well as his dedication to ensuring accurate and equitable representation.

Serves as the director and authorized representative of the NGO Durmish Aslano, as well as the editor-in-chief at Romano Avazo radio. Alongside his role at the radio station, Menekshe actively works to secure funds to sustain the NGO's operations. Menekshe is also involved as an actor in the theater "Nexhip Menekshe," which operates within the NGO. He pursued his education at "Ukshin Hoti" University in Prizren, majoring in "Albanian Language and Literature."
